SHAKE it up!
“I had the landscape in
my arm as I painted it.
I had the landscape in
my mind & shoulder
& wrist.”
- Helen

Welcome to my website
My name is Janice Horn and I have always been an artist. I taught my first art class at four years
old!
From obtaining a Drafting Certificate and a Web and Print Production
Diploma, to creating murals, painting, pysanky (Ukrainian Egg Decorating),
drawing and writing poetry, I have done it all. I feel blessed to have
made a living doing what I love.
I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2006 at the age of 37. It was art that allowed me to express the feelings of sadness and despair that
followed. I truly believe that art saved my life. It is the only thing that
allowed me to — for short periods of time — forget that I had PD. I was so overwhelmed at that time. Those breaks when I was
painting were so valuable.
A few years later, on a trip to the Mayan Riviera with my husband, we went to Coba to see one of the largest pyramids in the area. Standing at
the bottom, looking up at the towering structure I thought, I have PD.
How can I possibly think of climbing this?” Then I thought, “How can
I not?” I did climb it of course and soon realized that many healthy
people couldn’t make it — or worse yet — didn’t even try. That’s when
I realized, Parkinson’s isn’t the end, it’s the beginning.
I love to use my art to raise awareness and educate the
public about the realities of living with a chronic, progressive disease.
“Art is powerful (and fun). Why not use it?”
